Research centres, laboratories, groups and chairs
The Department of Literatures and Languages of the World put great emphasis on research. Our professors work on their own interests and collaborate within various research teams.
Research Training Group Diversity: Mediating Difference in Transcultural Spaces
Bringing together scholars and PhD students from Montréal, Saabrücken, and Trier, our International Research Training Group Diversity: Mediating Difference in Transcultural Spaces pursues an innovative research program in the contested fields of diversity, multiculturalism, and transnationalism. It does so by examining paradigmatic changes and historical transformations in interpreting multicultural realities in North America (Québec and Canada in particular) and Europe (Germany and France in particular) since the 18th century.
Centre de recherche interuniversitaire sur la littérature et la culture québécoises (CRILCQ)
CRILCQ brings together researchers from many universities working in literary, theatrical, artistic and musical studies, and in cultural history. It aims to improve knowledge of Quebec's literature and culture by producing major analysis and theoretical reflections on contemporary literature and culture.
CRIalt (Centre de recherches intermédiales en arts, lettres et techniques)

CRIalt is the 1st research centre in Quebec and Canada dedicated to intermedia bearings and their historical, sociological, cultural and political ties.
Shakespeare in Performance Research Team (SPRiTE)
The Shakespeare in Performance Research Team is based at McGill University. Since its inception in 1993, it has included members from neighbouring Montréal institutions such as Concordia University, the Université de Montréal, UQAM, and the National Theatre School.
Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Montreal (CIRM/CRIEM)

Based at McGill University, the CIRM brings together researchers from several Montréal institutions with the objective of contributing to greater knowledge of the city through bringing research in a broad range of disciplines into dialogue and exchange.
Centre interuniversitaire d’études sur les lettres, les arts et les traditions (CÉLAT)

The CÉLAT mainly conducts fundamental research aimed at producing knowledge for the academic community. It promotes interdisciplinary dialogue in the cultural field, through its new programming on the theme of “coexisting despite increasingly pluralistic societies.” The CÉLAT is probably Quebec’s most diversified research centre, thanks to its links through its members to 16 disciplines and many means of knowledge production, as well as the most open to changes in research formats. In short, the Centre is becoming a unique model serving as a noteworthy example and a source of inspiration.
Laboratoire sur les récits du soi mobile
The idea of a mobile laboratory to collect people’s stories began with the observation that we are entering a period that is increasingly dominated by tales about ourselves and about mobility. Such mobile narratives, in their new media context, are local creations, disseminated worldwide in real time. They are networked, georeferenced and often ephemeral creations that reach beyond the formal boundaries of literature and become the lynchpin of social and economic exchanges in our era of global communication.
The laboratory, bringing together a number of major Quebec players (Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec, the Institut national de l’image et du son, the Quartier des spectacles Partnership, the Society for Arts and Technology and the Maison de l'architecture du Québec, among others), offers a unique research infrastructure, mobile and adaptable, a place for encounters and study based on a 3-legged platform of the university, public streets and spaces, and the virtual domain.
